I often see the design of a diode in parallel with a PFC inductor on the Internet, such as D1 in the figure above. What is the function of this diode?

Is it because the PFC circuit has a sudden large current at the moment of opening to provide a direct charging path? Or is it for other reasons?

In order to protect the secondary chip of D2 and T1 from damage, it may also suppress the surge during electrolytic power-up.
